Home Builder Donates to Foster Elementary School

When Principal Terri VeDepo gave a tour of Foster Elementary School to N. Harris Malik, a guest at the school’s Principal for a Day event in October, she found a supporter.
“I wasn’t looking for a donation when I told him how nice my teachers were,” said VeDepo. “The teachers had applied for a grant, which was turned down, so I was trying to fund their project through our school’s limited budget. They removed many of their original requests to lower the cost.”
“Mr. Malik offered to help pay for the unfunded items when he had no idea how much they would cost. That was so nice!” emphasized VeDepo.
As it turned out, the price of the books was about $330, but it could have been much more. In addition, Malik, who is owner of Sunrise Custom Homes in Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth, came back to Foster Elementary with a portable public address system to give to the school’s Physical Education teacher, whose P.A. system had been stolen.
“I was really touched,” explained Malik. “I decided to be part of that.”
Thirty-one community members were Principals for a Day and had an opportunity to look behind the scenes at the challenges and successes of teachers and administrators at Humble ISD schools.
